The term Sidesword is usually used to refer to straight swords with key hilt developments such as finger rings, side rings and knuckle bows. They vary significantly, and took many forms. Later on, the more fully developed rapier and basket hilts came into being, but Sideswords continued to be made, as they were still a functional and cost effective mix of comfort, cost and defensive features.
